It
feels way too much like summer
Dale's yard through the season -
as of 7/15/2010
-
Day
lilies are at there peak. I've begun to get a nice mix of colors and blooming
times.
-
Many of
the cherries dropped. The Wealthy and Honey Crisp apples look great as does
the Reliance peach.
-
The
False Spirea and the Astilbe are beginning to come into their own. The Blazing
Star which were left overs from Fedco last year are starting to bloom.
-
The compost had reached 160° for a couple weeks. After that super heated
time it has "cooled" to about 120°. I need to turn it.
-
The potted plants survived very well. We continue to
sell leftovers.
See the list
of leftovers we have potted for sale.
-
Given the mild winter, some of the invasives have really started
to send out extra shoots and their seeds are sprouting. Be careful to
identify little Burning Bush and Autumn Olive so you can get rid of them before
they get established.
-
Check out the Yardscaping website which is part of the Board of
Pesticides site at www.Maine.gov . They have
added more great materials and links for low maintenance yard management. They
have also done much more work on it over the past month.

The winter of 2009-10 is now over. While our snowfall was about
average this year, it nearly all arrived at the end of 2009 and beginning of
2010. Then we received very little.
-
Our rain is also just about normal year-to-date. However, like
the snow, much of it comes in short heavy downpours.
-
Our Heating Degree Days were about 10% below normal this year.
So... your heating oil or propane use should have been about 10% what you
normally use. Don't give yourself too much credit if you used less that in past
years. It may have simply been that you didn't need any. I shut my
furnace off weeks ago for the heat in the house. I do need to run the furnace
for my domestic hot water.
